Why aren’t more people talking about the very poor service on the iPhone in New York City? It barely works to make a call and has many spots with no service at all, especially in Brooklyn.

I read somewhere that AT&T is the sole service provider for the new iPhone 3G. I am planning to buy the iPhone but my current service provider is Verizon. I am happy with my service provider and do not want to change. Is it still possible for me to use the iPhone without AT&T service?
